Amnion n. innermost membrane of the sac enclosing the embryo of a mammal, reptile, or bird
Amylase n. enzyme found in saliva and in the pancreatic juice and that acts on starch and other substances contained in the food we eat
Aorta n. main artery of the body, carrying blood from the left ventricle of the heart to all the main arteries
Barnacle n. small marine crustacean that attaches itself to rocks and ships
Bile n. juice secreted by the gall bladder
Billion n. a thousand millions
Bronchi n. any of the major air passageways of the lungs; esp., either of the two main branches of the trachea, or windpipe
Browse v. tp feed on tender shoots, twigs or leaves of trees
Camouflage v. to disguise, false pretense
Carnivorous adj. flesh eating; insect-eating
Catalyst adj. substance that initiates a reaction and enables it to take place under milder conditions
Central adj. in or near the center
Cerebellum n. section of the brain behind and below the cerebrum
Cerebrum n. upper, main part of the brain of vertebrate animals
Color adaptation n. change of color to blend with nature as concealment, or to warn
Compound n. (eye) an eye made up of numerous simple eyes functioning collectively, as in insects
Cud n. swallowed food brought up for rechewing by a ruminant
Dendrites n. neurons that carry impulses towards the cell body
Enzyme n. substance that acts as a catalyst in metabolism
Epiglottis n. thin cartilage behind the tongue that moves upward to cover the glottis, the cavity that lets air pass to the lungs, to avoid food going through the wrong canal
Fetus n. unborn young of an animal while still in th uterus or egg
Graze v. to feed on growing grass or herbs
Herbivorous adj. feeding chiefly on grass or other plants
Hibernate v. sleep through the winter
Insulin n. juice secreted by the pancreas
Invertebrate adj. not vertebrate; having no backbone, or spinal column
Lymph n. clear, yellowish fluid resembling blood plasma found in intercellular spaces and in the lymphatic vessels of vertabrates
Magnetic field n. region subject to the influence of magnetism (attraction or rejection)
Medulla n. inner substance of an organ, as of the kidney, adrenal gland, etc
Mimicry n. superficial resemblance that some organisms exhibit to other organisms to secure protection or other advantage
Nephron n. single urinary tubule in the vertabrate kidney
Neurons n. cells that make up the brain and spinal cord
Omnivorous adj. eating any sort of food, exp. both animal and vegetable food
Osmosis n. tendency of liquids to pass through porous partitions and become diffused
Peripheral adj. belonging to or forming a periphery; lying at the outside or away from the central part
Peristalsis v. to surround, involve the rhythmic, wavelike motion of the walls of the alimentary canal and certain other hollow organs
Pheromones n. chemicals that help externally to regulate an animal's environment by influencing other animals of the same species
Placenta n. vascular organ, developed within the uterus of most mamals during gestation from the chorion of the embryo and a part of the maternal uterin wall
Predator n. animal that preys or eats other animals
Prey n. victim; an animal killed by another for food
Reflexes n. movement performed automatically, involuntarily, in consequence of a nervous impulse
Phytoplankton n. plankton consisting of plant life
Plankton n. group of minute plants and animals that float in the ocean
Species n. seeing, appearance, shape, kind or quality
Symbiotic Relationship n. living together, or close union, of two different organisms with mutual benefits for both
Trachea n. in the respiratory tract of most land vertabrates, the tube extending from the larynx to the two bronchi
Umbilical Cord n. tough, corlike structure connecting the naval of a fetus to the placenta and serving to supply nourishment to and remove waste from the fetus
Urea n. substance found in urine
Ureter n. duct or tube that carries urine from a kidney to the bladder or cloaca
Ventricle n. sny of various cavities or hollow organs
Vertebrate adj. having a backbone, or spinal column
Zooplankton n. plankton consisting of animal life
