US Secretary of Education Richard Riley was the guest of honor at a presentation of Cyber High at Roosevelt High School on March 3, 2000. Students from Roosevelt High school who are enrolled in the Cyber High program demonstrated several Cyber High courses for Secretary Riley. The students also had the opportunity to share how Cyber High is helping them to graduate from high school. Most students cited the ability to work at their own pace and the convenience of the program as the keys to their success with Cyber High.
Secretary Riley expressed how impressed he was with the Cyber High program. He also spoke about closing the digital divide that exists among students from more affluent communities and those from less privileged backgrounds. The Secretary applauded the funding of programs like Cyber High through the Federal Technology Challenge Grant program. Cyber High is currently funded through the federal grant program.
Joining Secretary Riley in his praise for Cyber High was Congressman Cal Dooley of the 20th Congressional District. Three years ago, Congressman Dooley announced Cyber High as a recipient of a Federal Technology Challenge Grant and has visited the program several times. In addition, Assemblywoman Sarah Reyes attended the
presentation. As an alumnus of Roosevelt High School, Ms. Reyes has had a special interest in following the progress of the Cyber High program in the Central Valley. Words of praise were also heard from Dr. Peter G. Mehas, Superintendent of Fresno County Schools. The Cyber High program operates under a partnership with the Fresno County Office of Education.
