Intra-textual Relations refers to the ways in which text is constructed including topic, vocabulary, grammar, and text structure. Certain types of texts have features which assist the reader in ascertaining the type and purpose of the text and which reflect a particular world view. A high school level physics text for instance, will make generous use of technical vocabulary and complicated sentence structures. The text may assume of certain educational background on the part of the reader and be structured in a very linear way. In contrast, a sonnet may use ordinary language in smiles and metaphors and be structured in a definite pattern. Both types of text require an understanding on the part of the learner of the role that these features play in constructing meaning. |
