Pre-textual Relations

Pre-textual Relations or extra-textual refers to the relationships centered around what occurs before the reader approaches the text. It deals with origin, purpose, genre, function, audience, and general location of the text and refers to the fact that texts exist in specific social, cultural, and historical context.

For example, a high school level United States history textbook company which in turn has been approved for adoption by a state committee. The committee is charged with certain responsibilities concerning content, methodology, and support materials, expected by parents, educators, and the community. It also reflects a uniquely American perspective, for instance, of World War II, which might differ vastly from the Japanese view of the same historical period. All of these features stand outside of text itself and give the reader information before an actual encounter.
