Grammar Through Literature B

   

Course Description

Grammar Through Literature B helps students learn how to use the English language in a more effective way. Grammar rules from Grammar Through Literature A arereviewed to continue building a good foundation for writing effective paragraphs and essays.  The course uses a variety of literature (fiction and nonfiction, short stories, articles, biographies, etc.) to review the grammar topics, increase comprehension, and to offer opportunities for practical application of the principles.  Each Unit includes a Glossary and Appendix that provides grammar information for English learners and is offered as a tool to build English proficiency.  Major topics of the course include writing complete sentences and paragraphs, punctuation, spelling, capitalization, correct use of modifiers, preparing and delivering a speech, writing a résumé, and completing a job application.  Students will engage in activities utilizing The Writing Process including composing a basic five paragraph essay, completing a research project, composing persuasive, analytical, and reflective essays and responses to literature, and writing business letters and thank-you notes.

Unit 6 – Grammar and Writing Basics, Part Six

This Unit is based on the English Language Development Standards, but also addresses the following Curriculum Standards for Grades 9-12:

  • Word Analysis, fluency, and Systematic Vocabulary Development 1.1: Identify and use the literal and figurative meanings of words and understand word derivations.
  • Reading Comprehension 2.4: Make warranted and reasonable assertions about the author’s arguments by using elements of the text to defend and clarify interpretations.
  • Writing Strategies 1.1: Establish a controlling impression or coherent thesis that conveys a clear and distinctive perspective on the subject and maintain a consistent tone and focus throughout the piece of writing.
  • Writing Strategies 1.3: Use clear research questions and suitable research methods to elicit and present evidence from primary and secondary sources.
  • Writing Strategies 1.4: Develop the main ideas within the body of the composition through supporting evidence.
  • Writing Strategies 1.5: Synthesize information from multiple sources and identify complexities and discrepancies in the information and the different perspectives found in each medium.
  • Writing Strategies 1.6: Integrate quotations and citations into a written text while maintaining the flow of ideas.
  • Writing Strategies 1.7: Use appropriate conventions for documentation in the text, notes, and bibliographies by adhering to those in style manuals.
  • Writing Applications 2.3: Write expository compositions, including research reports.
  • Written and Oral English Language Conventions 1.1: Identify and correctly use phrases and mechanics of punctuation.

  • Written and Oral English Language Conventions 1.3: Demonstrate an understanding of proper English usage and control of grammar, paragraph and sentence structure, diction, and syntax.
  • Written and Oral English Language Conventions 1.4: Produce legible work that show accurate spelling and correct use of the conventions of punctuation and capitalization.
  • Written and Oral English Language Conventions 1.5: Reflect appropriate manuscript requirements, including title page presentation, pagination, spacing and margins, and integration of source and support material

Unit Objectives

The focus of Unit Six is on writing and research: writing complete sentences and paragraphs, composing a basic five paragraph essay, completing a simple research project, writing a résumé, and completing a job application. Students will also:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the grammar and writing topics
  • Demonstrate an ability to apply capitalization, spelling, and
    punctuation rules.
  • Complete the independent reading requirement, as determined by reading logs and conferences with the PASS contact teacher.
  • Master high frequency words with 100% recognition within the appropriate time limit.
  • Complete each communication task.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of fluency and building reading speed, as shown through increasing Words per Minute towards a goal of at least 250 WPM.

Unit 7 – Grammar and Writing Basics, Part Seven

This Unit is based on the English Language Development Standards, but also addresses the following Curriculum Standards for Grades 9-12:

  • Word Analysis, fluency, and Systematic Vocabulary Development 1.1: Identify and use the literal and figurative meanings of words and understand word derivations.

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the grammar and writing topics
  • Demonstrate an ability to apply capitalization, spelling, and
    punctuation rules.
  • Complete the independent reading requirement, as determined by reading logs and conferences with the PASS contact teacher.
  • Master high frequency words with 100% recognition within the appropriate time limit.
  • Complete each communication task.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of fluency and building reading speed, as shown through increasing Words per Minute towards a goal of at least 250 WPM.

Unit 9 – Grammar and Writing Basics, Part Nine

  • Master high frequency words with 100% recognition within the appropriate time limit.

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of fluency and building reading speed, as shown through increasing Words per Minute towards a goal of at least 250 WPM.
