Algebra A

Course Description

This course takes the students step-by-step from a review of Pre-Algebra skills to rational expressions and equations, polynomials, and the use of rational numbers to solve real life problems. Students learn to simplify and evaluate expressions, solve equations, understand algebraic properties, and graph real numbers.  This course introduces students to the fundamentals of the language of mathematics, including variables, terms, integers, equalities and inequalities. Much of the course covers abstract relationships and their manipulations, but it also involves algebraic thinking and the application of these skills to word problems and real life situations.

Course Content

Unit 1 - Review of Pre Algebra

California Curriculum Standards

Algebraic Skill 1.0 Students identify, use and compute with rational numbers using the four basic arithmetic operations. Use variables to write an expression, and an equation that represents a verbal description.  Use and understand algebraic terms  correctly.

Algebraic Skill 1.1  Students use properties of numbers to demonstrate whether assertions are true or false.

Algebraic Skill 2.0   Students understand and use such operations as taking the opposite, finding the reciprocal, taking a root, and raising to a fractional power.  They understand and use the rules of exponents.

Writing Strategies 1.1 Establish a controlling impression or coherent thesis that conveys a clear and distinctive perspective on the subject and maintain a consistent tone and focus throughout the piece of writing.

Writing Strategies 1.2. Use precise language, action verbs, sensory details, appropriate modifiers, and the active rather than the passive voice.

Writing Strategies 1.9 Revise writing to improve the logic and coherence of the organization and controlling perspective, the precision of word choice, and the tone by taking into consideration the audience, purpose, and formality of the context.

Writing Applications 2.1 Write biographical or autobiographical narratives or short stories.

Writing Applications 2.4   Write persuasive compositions.

Unit Objectives

Upon completion of this unit, the student will be able to:

  • Simplify and Evaluate expressions.
  • Translate words and sentences into algebraic expressions and equations.
  • Graph real numbers.
  • Add, subtract, multiply, and divide real numbers.
  • Identify basic algebraic properties.
  • Use of percents.
  • Utilize the Writing Process.

Unit 2 - Equations

California Curriculum Standards

Algebraic Skill 1.0  Students identify and use the arithmetic properties of subsets of integers and rational, irrational, and real numbers, including closure properties for the four basic arithmetic operations where applicable.

Algebraic Skill 2.0  Students understand and use such operations as taking the opposite, finding the reciprocal, taking a root, and raising to a fractional power.  They understand and use the rules of exponents.

Algebraic Skill 4.0  Students simplify expressions before solving linear equations and inequalities in one variable.

Algebraic Skill 5.0  Students solve multi-step problems, including word problems, involving linear equations and linear inequalities in one variable and provide justification for each step.

Algebraic Skill 15.0  Students apply algebraic techniques to solve rate problems, work problems, and percent mixture problems.
