A course in which students learn about the human effect on the environment, the consequences of population growth, and the effect of toxic wastes. survival skills are also included.

Course Content

Unit VI - Pollution

  • List approaches to environmental improvement.
  • Name the four main types of pollution, sources of pollution, and ways to control each.
  • Identify the gases found in the air and in smog.
  • List the effects of pollution on the human body.
  • Describe good ozone and bad ozone.
  • Complete a Science Project on a balanced ecosystem.

Unit VII - Conservation, Recycling and Wild Life Management

  • Identify 8 or more endangered species and tell what is being done to preserve them.
  • Identify four practices that have endangered wildlife.
  • List 5 or more soil conservation methods and identify those methods which also conserve water.
  • Explain how fires affect forest lands.
  • Explain the advantages and disadvantages of the alternative energy sources.
  • Measure the electricity and gas used in your household and practice five or more ways of saving energy.
  • Explain the problems our failure to recycle is causing us.
  • List 5 or more factors that discourage people from recycling.
  • Complete a Science Project about Conservation and Wild Life.

Unit VIII - Wilderness Living and Safety Skills

  • Relate facts about the art of orienteering.
  • Explain what to do if you get lost in the wilderness.
  • Describe shelter construction; how to locate and gather food and build a fire outdoors.
  • Understand the principles of first aid and attend to minor emergencies.
  • Understand the principles of backpacking and wilderness survival.
  • Identify the importance of earthquake in California.
  • Research the technology, Global Positioning Satellites (GPS).

Unit IX - Surviving in a Modern World

  • Identify hazardous substances and make the proper decision to dispose of such substances.
  • Be aware of the human resources as a country's source of wealth.
  • Explain the effects of alcohol, tobacco and drugs in the human body.
  • Understand the role and influence of advertising.
  • Distinguish facts from myths in relation to alcohol and drugs.

Unit X - Human Ecology

  • Identify factors involved in controlling the world's population rate.
  • Explain the consequences of high population density.
  • Identify trends and consequences in population changes.
  • List the four food groups and apply 4 dietary guidelines to a menu.
  • Make a daily plan and rank activities according to importance.
  • List 5 time savers and 3 ways to cure procrastination.
  • Apply at least 3 principles to organize your space.
  • Explain the roles of a city council, planning commission and planning department.
  • Make a personal statement on your contribution to the environment including a possible career in environmental science.
  • Conduct a Science Investigation based on a critical human ecology concern
